Kopo Kopo aspires to change the way businesses access credit in emerging markets. We are partnering with wildly successful mobile money systems like M-PESA to build a lending platform that enables businesses to access credit and other value-added services through digital payment acceptance.

The Merchant Engagement Executive will be responsible for expanding revenue from existing and newly-acquired merchants, up-selling of value added services and maintaining relationships with existing merchants. As an engagement expert, the Merchant Engagement Executive will ensure that the merchant base continues to grow and will work on retention strategies for existing merchants. As a champion for efficiency, the Merchant Engagement Executive will determine best practices for both communicating to large groups of merchants and getting specific feedback while maintaining a lasting, professional relationship with the merchant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive for expansion of revenue and volume from existing and newly acquired merchants
  • Merchant retention for newly-acquired and the existing merchants
  • Upgrading of merchants from one segment to another
  • Merchant re-branding and re-training
  • Up-selling of our value added services to the merchants
  • Generating leads/referrals from existing merchants
  • Making technical presentations and demonstrating how products meet merchants’ needs
  • Daily/weekly reporting on engagement activities
  • Daily/weekly monitoring of merchants transaction trends and ensuring anomalies in transactions are reported and acted upon
  • Suggest improvement to the system to better customer experience

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university
  • 2+ years of experience in account management
  • Detail-oriented and data-driven
  • Passion and enthusiasm for technology and serving the merchant with a world-class customer service
  • Good knowledge of mobile operator products and services
  • Demonstrated understanding/experience of the operation of mobile payments
  • Superior communication and multi-tasking skills
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Must have a desire to work collaboratively with sales and business development and be Part of a fast-paced environment.

Head of Finance

Full-time: Nairobi, Kenya

Kopo Kopo aspires to change the way businesses access credit in emerging markets. We are partnering with wildly successful mobile money systems like M-PESA to build a lending platform that enables businesses to access credit and other value-added services through digital payment acceptance.

The Head of Finance will provide financial leadership and analytical rigor to the company’s operational areas. The individual will work to develop financial statements, operations, forecasts, budgeting models, and other data-driven analyses to support the Kopo Kopo business. The head of finance will report to the Chief Operating Officer while the Accountant and Procurement Analyst will report directly to them.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with management team to develop yearly revenue plans and budgets
  • Develop and refine financial management systems, including:
    • Documenting and enforcing financial policies and procedures
    • Monitoring and maintaining budgetary controls: analyzing and communicating financial results compared with budgets/forecasts to identify areas for increased efficiency and cost reduction
    • Improving efficiency of cash flow management, particularly managing merchants funds
    • Collaborating closely with Product and Engineering teams to develop financial management systems appropriate to new products
  • Accounting and financial reporting:
    • Timely preparation of monthly and annual financial statements
    • Drive refinement of book-keeping tools and processes
  • Create and maintain a treasury management system including reconciliation of multiple financial accounts
  • Manage the finance team, consisting of procurement/financial operations resources and external accounting resources
  • Maintain positive relationships with financial partners and contacts, in particular, bankers, suppliers and other creditors
  • Enhance and ensure compliance

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting required, Master’s degree in Finance and/or MBA and/or Certifications (CPA) preferred
  • 5+ years of broad-based, progressive financial analysis and planning experience
  • Previous management experience
  • Experience in the financial services industry, with particular preference for experience in payments or lending companies
  • Ability to communicate complex financial concepts to partners with diverse backgrounds, including leadership, board of directors, investors, and other operational resources.
  • Knowledge of Kenya, US and global accounting and taxation issues, including IFRS and GAAP principles
  • Significant experience & familiarity with cash flow concepts such as DCF, IRR & NPV
  • Ability to balance multiple projects & processes simultaneously while maintaining exceptional attention to detail
  • Interest in technology start-ups and a flexibility to deal with a wide variety of challenges

Kopo Kopo is transforming the way merchants and their customers interact in emerging markets. Kopo Kopo is leveraging the wildly successful mobile money systems in emerging markets like East Africa to build a merchant services platform that includes mobile payment acceptance, merchant cash advances and other value-added services.

Summary

The Business Development Director, based in Nairobi, leads business development activities in our Africa group for all new and existing clients. This senior position will provide strategic leadership in business development in order to maintain a healthy, productive client pipeline of new business. The role also includes day to day management of all sales activities, including management of outside sales professionals and partners, to ensure the Kopo Kopo Africa meets all revenue targets. Areas of focus include:

Winning new business

  • Develop additional customer relationships in existing Kopo Kopo markets (e.g., Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda).
  • In cooperation with relationship managers, close new business with existing customers for new features such as Grow cash advances.
  • Prospect for new customers in new African markets.
  • Close new business as per the agreed-to Kopo Kopo business development plan.

Conducting the full range of business development activities

  • Develop, implement and run processes from prospecting through deal signing.
  • Maintain high quality standards for proposals, business cases, commercial frameworks.
  • Manage business development and pricing process (e.g. proposals, business case building, commercial frameworks and contracts).
  • Manage contract negotiations with input as needed from Kopo Kopo legal and executive teams.

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain a professional and effective communication to all levels, stimulating initiatives, innovations, and motivation for continuous improvements
  • Represent Kopo Kopo Kenya when directed, at conferences, meetings, corporate reviews, committees and working groups, to work on sales opportunities, marketing initiatives or other such ideas as conditions present
  • Report Weekly and Monthly results to the Kopo Kopo management team

Banks, mobile operators and other financial service providers in emerging markets are partnering with Kopo Kopo to use our Business OS platform as a way to digitize merchants through payments.  The Director of Technology Solutions will lead a team responsible for deploying and supporting implementations of the Kopo Kopo Business OS in different markets.

The Director will report directly to the CTO.  The Director will manage a growing team of Solutions Engineers and Operational Support Analysts.  The Director will liaise with Partner Relationship Managers responsible for successful delivery of OS solutions.  The Director will also closely collaborate with the Core Technology team responsible for building new products.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Manage a team of 10+ software engineers and technical support analysts
  • Coordinate multiple, simultaneous implementation projects across different geographies and time zones
  • Set and manage expectations with integration partners including establishing key relationships with IT counterparts
  • Ensure timely and quality delivery of new services
  • Establish and maintain a 24/7 technology support infrastructure post-implementation
  • Collaborate with the Core Technology and Product team in strategic planning of product development activities.
  • Maintain a dynamic set of partner-facing technology materials including integration guides
  • Assist Partnership Relationship Managers and Sales team on selling new services
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting to Partner Relationship Managers and others

Desired skills and experience

  • Bachelors degree in computer science, computer engineering or related IT field (Graduate degree a plus)
  • MBA or Master’s in Technology Management a plus
  • 7+ years with a top-tier management or technology consulting firm or the equivalent in-line experience delivering enterprise-level software
  • 5+ years of project management experience
  • 2+ years web application development experience, capable of deeply understanding and working at all layers of a web application stack; designing and implementing large, distributed and scalable services
  • Able to manage diverse, simultaneous projects of varying complexities.
  • Demonstrable experience in playing a leadership role with a team of engineers that successfully “shipped” products.
  • Experience leading the development of successful products in an agile environment
  • Experience with cloud computing and multi-tenant and single-tenant software architecture
  • Familiarity with our development stack which includes Ruby on Rails, Postgresql, Android, Apache, Phusion Passenger, Ubuntu Linux, AWS, JavaScript (Angular.js), Bootstrap and use tools such as JIRA, GitHub, Square Squash, Jenkins, Redis, New Relic among others

The executive based in Nairobi will be a quality control gatekeeper and an optimizer of the onboarding application process. As a gatekeeper, the executive will ensure that merchants on the Kopo Kopo platform meet our standards. As an optimizer, the executive will be focused on ensuring the dispatch process is followed and that no applications are rejected due to a duplicate or fraudulent application.

Responsibilities

  • Vetting application forms with the aim of nullifying fraud
  • Communicating to our sales team the verified application details and/or rejected applications
  • Sending dispatch to the mobile operators
  • Digitizing and filing physical application forms
  • Data entry of new merchants
  • Planning and implementing iterative efforts to achieve predictable process results
  • Initiating and implementing quality improvement processes throughout the onboarding process
  • Answering queries from sales and support teams regarding application status
  • Sim card reconciliation with the mobile operators
  • Uploading sim cards to the till tracker
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university
  • Previous working experience in the Banking or Telecommunications industry an advantage
