Head of Finance

Kopo Kopo is transforming the way merchants and their customers interact in emerging markets and developing countries. Kopo Kopo leverages successful mobile money and other digital payment systems onto a customized merchant payment platform to help merchants grow and prosper. Using a data-driven approach, the platform leverages all available data to offer a suite of value-added services such as marketing tools and cash advances.

Kopo Kopo seeks a Head of Product who will play a lead role in developing Kopo Kopo’s products that specifically addresses customer needs. The Head of Product will work closely with business, design, and technology stakeholders to ensure alignment of visions.

Responsibilities

  • Set a long-term vision for the Kopo Kopo platform. Think strategically about our product/market fit and our abilities to execute on this vision
  • Own the product roadmap of the Kopo Kopo platform, thinking holistically across the entire value chain to further Kopo Kopo’s position as a global leader in digital payment acceptance
  • Work with our customers to better understand their problems and issues with digital payment acceptance today
  • Develop products that specifically addresses our customer’s core problems
  • Define the product management process with a focus on rapid iteration, testing, and re-tooling using the agile methodology
  • Help recruit, develop and retain top product management and design talent
  • Think intrinsically about integration points with legacy systems and repercussions on product features.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders (customers, product owners, designers, engineers, management) in crafting the Kopo Kopo product and services

Desired Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years of product management experience, with experience in financial services, payments, or merchant services highly preferred
  • Experience working for startups and a track record of growing a business
  • Degree in engineering, science or related technical field. An MBA is a plus
  • Passion and desire to think big and build a global billion dollar business
  • Data-driven approach of measuring product success and driving teams
  • Demonstrated track record managing all aspects of a successful product throughout its lifecycle, including product strategy, requirements definition, and product marketing
  • In-depth knowledge of Agile development processes, and a clear understanding of pros and pitfalls

Kopo Kopo is leveraging the wildly successful mobile money systems in emerging markets like East Africa to build a merchant services platform that include mobile payment acceptance, merchant cash advances, and other value-added services.

About the role

We are looking for a software engineer who can come in and work on various projects that Kopo Kopo is currently undertaking. This is a hands-on software development role. It will encompass all aspects of the software development life-cycle working with a small engineering team and demands a high understanding of application design and architecture.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Engineering team in developing the whole suite of Kopo Kopo products (web, android, sms)
  • Be a major contributor to the Agile Software Methodology which we use at Kopo Kopo
  • Work with partners on integrations that will require involvement in all aspects of the software development cycle from requirement analysis to implementation
  • Develop software using our development stack which includes Ruby on Rails, Postgresql, Android, Apache, Phusion Passenger, Ubuntu Linux, AWS, jQuery, Angular.js, Bootstrap and use tools such as JIRA, GitHub, Square Squash, Jenkins, Redis, New Relic among others

Desired Skills and Experience

  • You should be comfortable with system architecture and component design and be able to use design patterns
  • Develop features across multiple subsystems within our application by collaboration during requirements definition, designing, coding, testing, and deployment
  • Participate with engineering, operations and business teams to define plans for scaling, enhancing and standardizing our products
  • Have the ability to leverage asynchronous programming, queueing, caching, logging security and persistence when appropriate
  • Have experience in building data-driven applications using significant relational database engines as part of the application architecture
  • Experience in working with systems with complex security models/implementations
  • Understand how our applications (Rails, Android, SMS, USSD) operate, are structured, interact with external systems and how our customers use them
  • Document proposed solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams etc.
  • Ruby experience is necessary
  • Be able to operate in an agile, fluid and uncertain environment wearing ‘multiple hats’
  • Be willing to put in ‘extra hours’ in a startup environment and deal with challenging deadlines
  • Demonstrate success at having been able to ‘ship’ products individually or as part of a team. You need to be able to get things done.

The Business Development & Partnership Manager, based in Nairobi, leads both business development activities and project management/relationship management for existing and new partnerships.

Business development

This senior position will provide strategic leadership in business development in order to maintain a healthy, productive client pipeline of new business. The role also includes day to day management of all sales activities, including management of outside sales professionals and partners, to ensure Kopo Kopo meets all revenue targets.

Partnership management

From the day a deal with a new partner has been closed, the Business Development & Partnership Manager oversees the project management activities. Once the service is live you will support the partner in driving usage of the service.

Business Development responsibilities

  • Develop BD strategy and plan in line with the Kopo Kopo long term strategy
  • Develop new partnerships in new and existing markets
  • Upsell products with existing partners (e.g. in Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe)
  • Develop, implement, and run processes from prospecting through deal signing
  • Maintain high-quality standards for proposals, business cases, commercial frameworks
  • Manage business development and pricing process (e.g. proposals, business case building, commercial frameworks, and contracts)
  • Manage contract negotiations with input as needed from Kopo Kopo legal and executive teams

Partnership management responsibilities

  • Oversee project management activities of the technical and business work streams
  • Coordinate engagement activities to ensure a good uptake of the implemented service, e.g. weekly and monthly reporting, incident management, business and market advice
  • Stakeholder relationship management of all partners involved e.g. acquiring partners, MNOs, PRSPs
  • Requires up to 30% travel

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain a professional and effective communication to all levels, stimulating initiatives, innovations, and motivation for continuous improvements
  • Represent Kopo Kopo when directed at conferences, meetings, corporate reviews, committees and working groups, sales opportunities, marketing initiatives or other such ideas as conditions present
  • Lead and motivate the Partnership Team
  • Report weekly and monthly results to the Kopo Kopo management team

Characteristics of a successful candidate

  • Understands the customer’s reality, challenges and “pain” and translate those needs into internal discussions and can clearly create problem statements, strategies, and actions
  •  A results oriented individual that is a good people’s manager, processes and follow-up on details. Should ideally have experience in project management in a technology environment
  • Is a strong team player who commands respect through relationships and teamwork. You can obtain buy-in from stakeholders and create shared objective to get things done, rather than on reporting hierarchies
  • Has progressive B2B Business Development experience preferably in the IT, Internet, Advisory, Consulting or Banking Sector
  • Familiarity with the Heiman & Miller Conceptual Selling approach is an added advantage

Desired Skills & Experience

  • University level degree required
  • 6+ years sales and business development experience with specific experience on enterprise software sales to large organizations
  • Project management experience, preferably in a software environment
  • At least 2 years management experience
  • Passion for relationship building
  • Deep understanding of selling to highly hierarchal organizations
  • A good knowledge of the mobile network operator corporate products and services
  • Demonstrated understanding/experience of the operation of mobile payments

The Merchant Engagement Executive will drive for expansion of revenue and volume from existing and newly acquired merchants, up selling of value added services and maintain relationships with existing merchants. As an engagement expert, the Merchant Engagement Executive will ensure that merchants base grow and also work on retention strategies of existing merchants. As a champion for efficiency, the Merchant Engagement Executive will determine best practices for both communicating to large groups of merchants and getting specific feedback while maintaining a lasting, professional relationship with the merchant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive for expansion of revenue and volume from existing and newly acquired merchants
  • Merchant retention for newly acquired and the existing merchants
  • Upgrading of merchants from one segment to another

The Data Analyst role is critical in strengthening the company’s Business Intelligence and Analytics capabilities. The primary responsibilities of the role are to ensure the proper monitoring and evaluation of key financial and performance metrics and to generate actionable insights that lead to significant revenue generation and/or cost reduction. This position will report to the Senior Data Analyst

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Business Intelligence
      • Develop weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports for management-level consumption.
      • Enable internal teams to monitor and track their key performance indicators (KPIs).
      • Consult with internal teams to influence their strategic decisions and KPIs
      • Ensure data quality and accuracy

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Quantitative degree in computer science, economics, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or an equivalent
  • 2+ years experience in an analytical role with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Knowledge and working experience in SQL and Relational Databases
  • Knowledge and working experience in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience in statistical software such as MATLAB, Octave, R, SAS, or STATA

The Grow Operations Associate will work under the Program Manager – SME Financing in the Grow program, Kopo Kopo’s cash advance service offered to merchants who accept digital payments on the Kopo Kopo platform. Their principal duties will be to ensure applicants have been thoroughly and efficiently vetted for Grow and to actively communicate with merchants that have fallen behind on their payments.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Application Processing

 

      • Respond to Grow inquiries from potential applicants
      • Contact Grow applicants lacking the necessary information
      • Collect, vet, and approve Grow applications, precisely adhering to the Grow know your customer (KYC) requirements
      • Work with the Program Manager – SME Financing to report any irregularities with merchant KYC documents
      • Work with the Program Manager – SME Financing to improve the KYC vetting process
      • Document and report to the Program Manager – SME Financing on the number of approvals and pending applications per day

 

  • Collections

 

    • Contact merchants who have fallen behind on repayments by precisely adhering to the Grow collections process
    • Work with the Program Manager – SME Financing to improve the KYC collections process
    • Document and report to the Program Manager – SME Financing on collections contacts on a weekly basis.

Key Performance Targets

 

  • Application Processing

 

      • Respond to all Grow inquiries within 4 business hours
      • Call back all Grow applicants missing the necessary information within 4 business hours

 

  • Collections Process

 

      • All merchants deemed ‘at risk’ are called within 1 business day
      • All points of the collections process are adhered to; with the process itself revisited every month

 

  • Reporting

 

    • Standard reports are kept up to date on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, depending on the frequency desired for the report.
